The northern Balkans, the former Yugoslavia, its successor states: Since the early 1990s, photographer Wolf Böwig has repeatedly undertaken extensive reportage trips there, most recently in March and April 2019, creating an archive of pictures, sketches, diaries, collages and impressions that reflect the serious political and social changes in this region over the past quarter century: the wars, the national and ethnic conflicts and the reconstruction up to the recent refugee crisis.
Wolf Böwig's photographs are expanded with collages by the photographer, texts by Ivona Grgurinović, Marko Dinić, Habbo Knoch, Pedro Rosa Mendes and sketches by David von Bassewitz. They form their own perspectives to approach the region.
The result is an assemblage - a combination of different approaches that open up new perspectives on the spaces of violence and how they are processed. They reterritorialize landscapes in the consciousness of the viewer, as places, borders and routes oscillate across time - like a resonance to the destruction of morals in the wars of the 1990s and their still unhealed wounds.
